NMCC to offer High Pressure Boiler Operator course
Presque Isle – Northern Maine Community College will be offering a 16-week High Pressure Boiler Operator Course on Thursday evenings, beginning September 19.
“A boiler operator is an essential trade for a lot of businesses in the County,” stated Doug Cyr, regional human resource manager at Irving Woodland Division. “At Irving Forest Products, our boiler operators are part of a larger team, responsible for the multi-boiler plant that provides process heat and building heat for the entire site.”
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the average wage for high pressure boiler operators to be $49,580 in Maine. The number of available positions is also projected to rise in the coming years.
In addition to providing the knowledge and techniques necessary to operate high pressure boilers and associated equipment, this 3-credit course prepares students to operate and maintain a steam generating plant in a safe and efficient manner. Course emphasis is on boiler classification, design, accessories and theory of operation, as well as State of Maine boiler regulations.
“An individual may come into the operation as a high pressure operator; however, they may grow and expand their knowledge as they work within the company,” Cyr explained.
The High Pressure Boiler Operator course meets the education requirements necessary to take the State of Maine High Pressure Operator Exam. This class will run every Thursday from 6:00-9:00 p.m. beginning September 19 and ending January 9.
