Organizations

Participation in student organizations and clubs is an excellent way to expand your network, to develop and showcase your teamwork and leadership skills and to have fun.  A wide variety of student organizations exist on campus each with its own unique emphasis.  So whether you are interested in student government or gaming — get involved!

Some of the current clubs on campus include:

Student Senate – The Student Senate is the official student voice on campus. As such, the greater the participation in the Senate, the greater the credibility of its position(s).  Senate members are representatives from each major program of study.  All students, whether or not they are Senate members, are encouraged to attend Senate meetings.

Phi Theta Kappa – Students achieving a 3.5 or greater cumulative grade point average while enrolled in a program of study at NMCC may be invited to join Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two year colleges. To maintain membership, the student member’s cumulative grade point average may not fall below 3.25. Phi Theta Kappa members receive leadership skills developed through campus and community projects in addition to special recognition throughout the year and at graduation.

Student Nurses Association – The Association provides opportunities for nursing students to explore the role of the nurse beyond the classroom and clinical experience. Any student who is enrolled in the nursing program is eligible for membership. Members participate in Student Senate activities, fundraising activities, and may participate in community, state, and national-level programs and activities. Monies raised have supported the Christmas Tree Gift Giving Project which provides gifts for the children of students enrolled at NMCC who need assistance; have been donated to House of Comfort and Angel Flight; and provided funds for students/families with medical needs. The Association promotes and encourages community health care activities and represents nursing students to consumers, institutions, and other organizations.

SkillsUSA – SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives, working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. It is a national organization serving teachers, and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations, and for further education.  NMCC’s chapter meets throughout the year to plan for the annual competition in Bangor. More than 700 Maine students vie for medals testing knowledge and skill in their chosen field…more than 75 separate areas of competition in all, from automotive technology to plumbing, speech to computer maintenance.

Early Childhood Education Club – The mission of the Early Childhood Education Club is to promote emergent literacy and learning opportunities for young children connected to the NMCC Community.

Generally, the group completes one fundraiser each year and completes at least one community-at-large event. Other events are in service to the school community. Examples of past activities include: Dr. Seuss’s Birthday, Children’s Holiday Party, healthy nutrition party, support to the Central Aroostook Animal Shelter, trip to the Montessori School/University of Maine at Orono, pinning ceremony and group movie/restaurant trips.

The Club is open to all students currently enrolled and in good standing with the Early Childhood program. Level of activity in the club is completely voluntary. The Club is run by self-elected president/vice president and secretary/treasurer panels. Heidi Smith is the current advisor.

Game Club -NMCC Game Club is a student organization developed by students, for students. We hold weekly gatherings where we play games like Munchkin, Cards Against Humanity, Monopoly and more. We also run a few large-scale events like movie nights, console-gaming nights, and our end-of- the-year Carnival Night.  Game Club meets weekly to determine which events we want to offer and is open to anyone. Join us for a fun time, even if you want to bring your own gaming system and play single player, we offer a fun atmosphere for everyone and any game! Gamers Unite!

EMS Association – This group of students focus their efforts on community teaching and safety. Our association hopes to raise awareness and bring much needed interest into the field of pre-hospital emergency medicine. It is our hope that in building interest in this field and the NMCC EMS program, that our communities gain highly-trained emergency medical personnel. We also hold fundraisers throughout the year to assist the paramedic students with their urban externship trip.
