Placement Testing

Academic readiness is key to success in any college program.  NMCC uses multiple measures to evaluate college-readiness through evaluation of transcripts, college-level experience and available test scores to make placement decisions.   This evaluation is part of the application process and must be completed in order to progress to an offer of admission.  Additional placement assessments (Accuplacer) will be administered by the college if necessary.

PLEASE NOTE: Individual academic programs of study, such as nursing, may have specific entrance requirements; contact the college admissions office and/or website for specific program entrance requirements.

For those who have taken ACCUPLACER and have not met the benchmark, remedial courses may be required. Click here for the Maine Community College System’s recommended ACCUPLACER scores.

If placement testing is necessary, applicants will be notified on the status of their results as follows:

    1. The applicant will begin their program of choice with no restrictions; OR
    2. The applicant will be offered conditional admissions into their program of choice with the stipulation of completing preparatory work in their first enrolled semester; OR
    3. An application may be placed on HOLD and a date for future re-test scheduled; OR
    4. Deferral from acceptance with a recommendation to take a college preparatory course at a local adult education center. On completion of this preparatory program, ACCUPLACER tests will be retaken and evaluated.
