Presque Isle –  This month NMCC aims to familiarize incoming students with both the campus and the college experience during a series of orientation sessions offered both in-person and online.

“Participating in new student orientation ensures students start off on the right foot,” said Matthew Grillo, NMCC’s dean of students. “It’s important for students to feel comfortable with the campus so they can easily access the services available to them. Navigating the student portal and learning management system is another key to success.”

On-campus orientations began in July and continue throughout August. The sessions take between 1.5 and 2 hours and are customized to meet the needs of different student groups. Enrolled students have received details in the mail. Each on-campus session includes either lunch or a light snack.

In addition to on-campus orientation, the College is offering a virtual orientation session. For more information on orientation registration, please contact Tammy Nelson at ntnelson@nmcc.edu  or (207) 768-2747.

The sessions include essential information regarding how to make the first weeks of college more productive while reducing stress. Students will have the opportunity to discuss schedules, double-check financial aid status, and receive assistance with technology questions.

“The past year taught all of us that some fluency with technology—whether it’s email, ZOOM, or a collaboration platform—can improve a student’s ability to thrive in their courses,” explained Grillo. “To be successful, we encourage students to take advantage of the technologies available to help them.”

Alongside learning college fundamentals, new students are required to complete a series of brief online modules to learn the basics of the College’s learning management system, Brightspace. This training helps students with time management techniques, provides access to resources, and prepares students to succeed in the upcoming semester. The class should be completed before the first day of fall semester on August 30th.
