NMCC’s TRIO program awarded five-year federal renewal

Northern Maine Community College (NMCC) has secured continued federal funding for its TRIO Student Support Services program, ensuring essential services remain available to students through 2030.

The five-year grant allows NMCC to keep offering academic advising, tutoring, financial aid assistance, career guidance and transfer planning to eligible students, with the goal of removing barriers to completing education.

“This funding ensures our students will continue to have the support and guidance they need to be successful,” said Johna Lovely, director of counseling at NMCC. “I have believed in the mission of this college throughout my career, and this program is essential to giving students the tools to thrive.”

Lovely has championed TRIO at NMCC for nearly three decades, working with counselor Melissa Perry and administrative support specialist Teila Pimental to expand the program’s reach and maintain its accessibility.

TRIO Student Support Services is one of eight federal programs administered by the U.S. Department of Education to help low-income, first-generation students and those with disabilities succeed in higher education.

“This program opens doors for students who might otherwise struggle in college,” Lovely said. “It’s about building confidence, creating community and making sure students know they belong here.”

NMCC President Doug Binsfeld said the grant renewal reflects the college’s mission and long-standing commitment to student success.

“We are thrilled that this vital support service will continue at NMCC,” Binsfeld said. “Our college is deeply student-focused, and the TRIO program represents the kind of high-impact, personalized support that helps learners succeed. It is a cornerstone of how we serve our mission, and I’m excited to see it continue.”
