NMCC Foundation “launches” skeet shooting fundraiser to benefit student work-study program
Presque Isle – The Northern Maine Community College Foundation is “launching” a new fundraising event to benefit the Student Work Study Program. A skeet shoot competition, sometimes called a clay target competition, will be held on Friday, September 27 at the Presque Isle Fish and Game Club. All members of the community are welcome to compete.
Skeet is a game that can be enjoyed by experienced and amateur shooters alike. Sport shooters may participate as an individual or as a member of a team of five. The event will take place in two segments. A limit of 30 shooters will participate in the morning session beginning at 9:00am. A second round of 30 shooters will participate in the afternoon session beginning at 1:00pm. The three shooters with the highest percentage of hit targets will receive special trophies designed for this event. The team with the highest percentage will also receive recognition.
Proceeds from the day’s activities will benefit the Student Work Study Program at NMCC. Since 2014, the minimum wage for a work study student has increased by approximately 40%; however, there has been no increase in federal work study allocation since 2007, therefore limiting the number of students who can benefit from participating. According to NMCC Dean of Students, Dr. William Egeler, “Campus-based work has been an effective strategy for improving college degree completion. Students who participate in a college-based work study program have a greater chance of successfully graduating on time and with less college debt.”
