Breaking the Mold: Sarah DeMerchant, Business Administration

Sarah DeMerchant, Business Administration Student

As a fully online student at Northern Maine Community College, Sarah DeMerchant brings a unique perspective to the Business Administration program. She chose NMCC knowing the skills and knowledge gained through the program would create a strong foundation for a wide range of career opportunities.

Now a senior, Sarah is already planning her next academic step. She intends to add Accounting as a second major, allowing her to complete two associate degrees in approximately three years. Her long-term goal is to pursue a business office or accounting position with a local employer.

Sarah’s educational journey has included online learning experiences prior to enrolling at NMCC. She was homeschooled during her junior year of high school and completed her senior year through Maine Connections Academy, an online program. Although she did not have previous coursework specifically in Business Administration, her familiarity with virtual learning environments helped ease her transition into NMCC’s online college classes after taking a two-year break from school.

Returning to the structure of assignments, deadlines, and higher academic expectations presented an initial challenge. However, Sarah says she appreciates the flexibility of completing coursework on her own schedule. This ability to balance responsibilities while continuing her education has been a key factor in her success.

Michelle Collins, an instructor in NMCC’s Business Technology Department, describes Sarah as an exceptional student.

“Sarah is a model student who consistently submits top-quality, thoughtful work, and she interacts very well with her peers in online discussions.”

Sarah encourages other women who may be considering the program to explore the opportunities a Business Administration degree can provide.

“What you learn in your Business Administration degree can be applied to whatever area you work in, whether you are starting your own business, working for someone else, or working in any field.”
