Phonological Awareness at Northern Maine Community College

The Aroostook Childcare Resource Center, in partnership with Northern Maine Community College, will offer a free Emergent Literacy Professional Learning Community (PLC) focused on Phonological Awareness.

This PLC is offered through a collaboration between the Maine Department of Education and the Maine Roads to Quality Professional Development Network.

Sessions will take place in NMCC’s new Timothy D. Crowley Building, home to NMCC’s Early Childhood Education program and the Aroostook Child Care Resource Center.

Dates, Topics & Location

Session 1: Wednesday, October 7, 5:00–6:30 p.m.
What phonological awareness is, when it develops, and why it is important.

Session 2: Wednesday, October 14, 5:00–6:30 p.m.
Levels of phonological awareness and features of effective phonological awareness instruction.

Session 3: Wednesday, October 21, 5:00–6:00 p.m.
Phonological awareness instruction in action and considerations for English language learners and students with disabilities.

Location: Timothy D. Crowley Building, Northern Maine Community College, Presque Isle

About This Professional Learning

This free PLC is designed for early care and education professionals working in preschool and kindergarten settings who want to learn more about emergent literacy development and how to build these skills in children ages 3–6.

Emergent literacy skills are the building blocks for learning to read and write.

The PLCs use professional learning modules developed by the Institute of Education Sciences.

This in-person PLC meets three times and includes:

Short pre-readings (2–3 pages)
Discussion
Video viewing
Hands-on learning
Reflective practice
Support from peers and trained facilitators
