Academic readiness is key to success in any college program. NMCC evaluates college-readiness through evaluation of SAT or ACCUPLACER scores or prior college credit. This evaluation is part of the application process and must be completed in order to progress to an offer of admission. Applicants are asked to submit SAT and ACCUPLACER scores, if available, along with their college application. Applicants who have taken their SAT and have gotten 530 or higher in Math and 480 or higher in Reading and Writing are not required to complete ACCUPLACER placement testing. Applicants who have not completed college-level work in English composition or Algebra with a C or better will be required to complete ACCUPLACER placement testing. For those who have taken ACCUPLACER and who have not met the benchmark, retesting will be required. Click here for the Maine Community College System’s recommended ACCUPLACER scores. ACCUPLACER testing is free to applicants and can be scheduled by calling the NMCC admissions office at 207-768-2785. On completion of placement testing, applicants will be notified on the status of their application as follows:
- Applicant will be offered admission into their program of choice.
- Applicant will conditionally be offered admission into their program of choice with the stipulation of completing preparatory work in their first enrolled semester or retaking the ACCUPLACER exam and meeting the benchmark for college readiness.
- An application may be placed on HOLD and a future retest date scheduled.
- Deferral from acceptance with a recommendation to take a college preparatory course at a local adult education center. On completion of this preparatory program, ACCUPLACER tests will be retaken and evaluated.
